Itemizing Taxes - Do I need to itemize deductions?
If your primary motivation in donating a motorcycle or other vehicle
is to gain a tax deduction you will need to itemize your deductions on
your Federal and State Tax Returns.
If currently you are not itemizing your deductions on a Long Form your
accountant would be able to tell you if making a motorcycle donation
would justify switching to itemizing your yearly deductions and using
the longer form.
If you cannot receive any tax benefit we can still arrange free pickup
and we can arrange for you to receive other valuable benefits through
a recycling program. For more information on the Vehicle
Recycling Program...

How much can I deduct on my tax return?
New IRS tax law simplifies procedure:
As of 1/1/05 you may deduct the full price we receive for the sale of your vehicle.
This significantly improves the procedure for you the donor in many ways:
- Should the sale of your motorcycle/boat/vehicle be over $500.00 USD, that amount will be the amount of your deduction; Therefore avoiding the hassle of
figuring out the Fair Market Value.
- Because sometimes donors run into trouble by overestimating the fair market value of their tax deduction, that wouldn't be a problem because this new change would prevent that.
- The two above save you both risk and your valuable time.
Here are the details:
- At auction your motorcycle/boat/vehicle sells for $500 USD or more, we're obligated to send you a tax receipt with the following data:
- The motorcycles' Vehicle Identification Number
and the name of the donor.
- That your motorcycle donation was at "arms length",
that meaning, that we are not related to you in any
way, family or by business.
- The price for which your vehicle sells becomes it's
Fair Market Value.
The above results in a much simpler process overall. As well as minimizing risks with the IRS
Should your motorcycle sell at auction for less than $500 USD, you are entitled to deduct what you feel the Fair Market Value is, but only if that amount is under $500 USD.
In this circumstance you would be sent a tax receipt that acknowledges your donation and which includes a description of your vehicle along with your name, and the date of the donation.
